Achilles rupture

- In Achilles tendinopathy, the tendon is palpated as thickened, tender, and crepitant with movement in the ankle joint
- Positive Thompson test in rupture (pressure on the gastrocnemius does not produce plantarflexion in the ankle joint)
- Reduced strength in active plantarflexion
Palpation of the Achilles
Achilles

Achilles rupture is noted as a gap at the muscle/tendon junction
Achilles rupture
Thompson test

- Squeeze the calf muscles and observe if plantarflexion occurs in the ankle joint
